Dr Gloria Mtomboti is a Board Certified Family Physician who is the founder of Ubuntu Family Medicine. It is located in the neighborhood known as the “Little Caribbean” and serves the broader Brooklyn community of East Flatbush. Dr Mtomboti completed her studies and residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. She went on to serve as a doctor there and teach residents for over twenty years. Her immersion in the community has created in her, a cultural
sensitivity, respect and understanding of the people. She understands the lifestyle and traditions, food and celebrations. She enjoys and participates fully in the life of the community.
Because of this, Dr. Mtomboti is able to treat her patients with cultural understanding and respect, building trust and rapport easily, such that patients feel welcomed, respected and heard.
In 2020, she decided to open Ubuntu Family Medicine, in order to give back directly to the community with a “grassroots” approach to health care, providing the people of the community access to a patient-centered, culturally sensitive health care experience. She is committed to truth, fairness and equity, which come from her own background as a Black woman, born in South Africa during the days of apartheid. She had to overcome great struggle and adversity, in order to survive. As one of nine children growing up in difficult circumstances, Dr. Mtomboti understands economic hardship. She believes in the values and discipline taught to her by her father and the extended family: to always strive for excellence, to work hard, to be resilient and to tell the truth. Serving others is a key value to Dr. Mtomboti, and is the reason she became a doctor in the first place.
Ubuntu, an old African term, for which the practice is named, reflects these values and the values of Community, Compassion and Service. Dr. Mtomboti chose to practice family medicine because she feels she can do the most good by helping individuals and families throughout their lives, not just when they are ill but when they are well. Through this continuity of care that includes, Educating, Guiding and Treating, Dr. Mtomboti intends to empower each one of her patients to achieve the very best health outcomes and quality of life.
